Understanding Fascism: A Look Back

Years ago, I discovered the meaning of the word “Fascist” in an old dictionary, and it shocked me. It defined fascism as a government that controls businesses, and in turn, those businesses control the citizens. This simple definition reveals a powerful truth: it’s all about control.

Changing Definitions

The meaning of fascism has shifted in recent years. The Oxford Learners Dictionary now describes it as an extreme right-wing political system that supports strong central government. It aggressively promotes one’s country or race above others and does not tolerate any opposition. This broader definition raises an important question: When did fascism appear in America?

Fascism in American History

Reflecting on the decline of the Republican Party, I believe fascism has been present in America for a long time. For instance, Henry Ford once made antisemitic remarks and supported Hitler, only to apologize later. Another example is Joseph McCarthy, who led the “House Un-American Activities Committee,” accusing many innocent people of being communists.

Even President Eisenhower played a role. In 1954, facing fears of communism, he encouraged Congress to add “under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance. While this change might seem harmless, it violated the First Amendment, which states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.” Many view this reference to God as an unwanted push for religious beliefs.

The Oligarchs Among Us

There has always been a faction within the government that wants to impose their views on everyone. Today, we call them Fascist, and they hold power. Their tactics can feel overwhelming, but we must remember that change is possible.

Taking Action

To combat the rise of fascism, we need to unite as citizens. Here are some actions we can take:

  1. Educate Ourselves and Others: Understanding our history helps us recognize patterns and make informed decisions.
  2. Engage in Conversations: Discuss these issues with friends, family, and community members to raise awareness.
  3. Vote: Support candidates who value freedom, equality, and democracy.
  4. Stand Up Against Intolerance: Challenge discriminatory ideas and practices publicly and encourage others to do the same.

By working together, we can reclaim our democracy and ensure that the voices of all citizens are heard. It’s time to clear out those little fascists who think they can control us, along with their supporters. Together, we can fix what is left and build a better future for everyone.
