Let me level with you. I’m tired of pretending. Tired of playing the polite game where we tiptoe around power because someone gave us a nice speech and flashed a toothpaste-commercial smile. Barack Obama didn’t start fascism in America—but he sure as hell feng shui’d the place for it.

We call it soft fascism. Because it didn’t goose-step, it glide-stepped. It used keyboards, not clubs. And it came with all the right music, all the right books, and a party invitation to Martha’s Vineyard. You know the type: brunch fascism with a dash of drone warfare. Brought to you by the man who promised hope and change—and then handed us Big Tech surveillance, extrajudicial kill lists, and enough NSA creepiness to make J. Edgar Hoover blush.

Yeah. That Obama.

But let’s rewind.

Remember when we were all clapping like trained seals about having our first Black president? Historic moment, right? Sure was. But historic don’t mean holy. From Day One, Obama was doing backflips to appease a GOP that was already lurching toward MAGA hell. And what did he get in return? Birther conspiracies and a Mitch McConnell blockade that’d make a Soviet border guard jealous.

But instead of fighting the fascist creep, Obama decided to manage it. Tame it. Make it his pet. That’s where the soft fascism slid in.

He cracked down on whistleblowers harder than any president before him—harder than Nixon, and Nixon at least had the decency to be obvious about it. He let the CIA keep their torture secrets buried. Hell, he gave the banks the biggest bailout in American history and prosecuted exactly zero Wall Street criminals. But don’t worry—he gave you Michelle’s arms and Lin-Manuel Miranda at the White House.

It was fascism with a Spotify playlist.

Let’s talk tech. Under Obama, the surveillance state didn’t just expand—it became industrialized. The NSA vacuumed up your texts, your emails, your metadata, and your mother’s soup recipes. All while he assured us it was just “metadata.” As if fascism gets a hall pass if it’s collecting your data with a neutral font.

And those drone strikes? Yeah, remember the kill lists? Targeted assassinations of American citizens without due process. That’s not “tough foreign policy.” That’s a constitutional war crime in khakis.

And don’t get me started on cops. Ferguson didn’t happen under Trump. It happened under Obama. Militarized police rolled out like invading armies in American cities—and what did Obama do? He gave a speech about unity while rubber bullets flew through the air like fireworks from hell.

So what’s the takeaway? Obama built the scaffold. Trump just brought the rope. And now Biden’s acting like we can all hold hands and vote our way out of this mess while the damn gallows creaks behind him.

Let me be real clear for the folks in the back: Obama wasn’t a fascist. But he enabled the architecture of fascism, normalized it, and left it polished and ready for the next wannabe dictator to use. That’s why the “return to normal” crowd can kiss my ass—because this is normal now. And it didn’t start with Trump. It metastasized under Obama.

And for the record—yeah, Obama was an American. Not that it matters, because Americanism itself has become an alibi for authoritarian rot. But since the birthers are still out there foaming at the mouth, consider this your footnote: Obama was born in the U.S.A. And he still managed to help smother the Republic with a silk pillow.

We let this happen. We clapped. We cried. We voted for poetry. And we got Predator drones over wedding parties and tech CEOs with keys to your private life.

It’s time to stop giving passes to people who smile while they gut you.

So no—I don’t think we should let this shit slide. Not now. Not ever.

History won’t remember the velvet gloves. Just the bruises they left behind.
