Facebook is no innocent bystander in the rise of Trump 2.0. Its algorithms actively promote divisive and extremist content because outrage drives clicks and revenue. Internal documents revealed in the Facebook Papers leak expose the company’s knowledge of this toxic dynamic and its decision to prioritize profit over public safety (Facebook Papers, 2021).

The platform’s design rewards content that stokes fear and hatred. Hate speech and conspiracy theories flourish, enabling fascist groups to organize openly. While some extremist pages are banned, many operate freely, recruiting and spreading dangerous misinformation (Anti-Defamation League, 2022). This digital environment has real-world consequences, including violence and deep social polarization.

Political advertisements on Facebook face little regulation, allowing falsehoods to flood users’ feeds during critical moments such as elections. Meanwhile, progressive activists often face censorship or demonetization, creating a stark double standard that benefits authoritarian movements (Isaac & Frenkel, 2020; Haugen, 2021).

This is not mere negligence—it is complicity in a growing authoritarian threat. Facebook’s role as a digital firestarter demands urgent resistance. Users must report hate, organize beyond online spaces, and pressure for genuine accountability.

The fight against fascism in the digital age requires confronting the platforms that enable it. Facebook’s algorithms have become weapons. Recognizing and resisting this reality is essential to safeguarding democracy.
