CHICAGO, Illinois — October 14, 2026

Let’s get the bad news out of the way first.

Nobody is coming to save you.

Not Superman.

Not Batman.

Not the Democrats.

Not the Republicans.

Not the Supreme Court.

Not the media.

Not Hollywood.

Not billionaires.

Not the ghost of George Washington riding down Pennsylvania Avenue on a white horse carrying a copy of the Constitution.

Sorry.

You’re all we’ve got.

We’re all we’ve got.

That’s how democracies have always worked.

Every generation seems to believe somebody else will step in at the last minute.

History says otherwise.

History usually says, “Well…where the hell was everybody?”

That’s the question your grandchildren may someday ask.

What did you do?

Not what did you believe.

Not what did you post.

Not what did you complain about.

What did you actually do?

Did you vote?

Did you encourage somebody else to vote?

Did you learn the issues?

Did you challenge lies when you heard them?

Did you defend people whose rights were under attack?

Or did you convince yourself somebody else would handle it?

Here’s the thing about republics.

They don’t die because evil people suddenly appear.

They weaken because decent people assume the system is indestructible.

It isn’t.

Nothing built by human beings is indestructible.

Bridges collapse.

Buildings decay.

Relationships fail.

Governments aren’t exempt from maintenance simply because they printed a Constitution.

Somebody has to care.

Somebody has to participate.

Somebody has to keep showing up.

Here’s another fantasy I’d like to retire.

“The adults in the room will fix it.”

Who are the adults?

Seriously.

Where are they?

Because from where I’m sitting, the adults are school teachers buying classroom supplies out of their own pockets.

The adults are nurses working double shifts.

The adults are firefighters, mechanics, truck drivers, librarians, electricians, farmers, and parents trying to keep everything from falling apart.

The adults are already busy doing their jobs.

Democracy is your job.

My job.

Our job.

Not theirs.

Too many Americans have outsourced citizenship.

They’ve contracted it out to television personalities.

Political consultants.

Professional activists.

Party headquarters.

Social media influencers.

The result?

Everyone has an opinion.

Fewer people have a plan.

Here’s your plan.

Vote.

Help somebody else vote.

Hold elected officials accountable after the election—not just before it.

Attend a meeting once in a while.

Read something longer than a headline.

Ask hard questions.

Demand honest answers.

Repeat as necessary.

Notice something?

None of that requires permission.

None of it requires millions of dollars.

None of it requires celebrity status.

It only requires deciding that democracy is worth an afternoon of your time.

And if it isn’t…

Then stop pretending you’re shocked when somebody else decides what your future looks like.

Here’s what I know.

Every generation reaches a moment when history quietly asks a simple question.

“Are you going to take this seriously?”

There’s no multiple-choice test.

There’s no extra credit.

There’s only the answer you leave behind.

The election is almost here.

The speeches will end.

The campaign signs will come down.

The television commercials will finally stop interrupting football games.

Then we’ll all have to live with whatever decision we made.

Or didn’t make.

Nobody is coming to rescue the American experiment.

There never was.

There never will be.

The rescue party has always had the same address.

It’s wherever citizens decide to stand up, speak up, and show up.

Hopefully…

That’s enough.

It always has been before.
