Well…

Here we are.

One week.

That’s it.

One more week before America decides whether it’s serious about all that complaining it’s been doing for the last four years.

I’ve got to admit, you’ve been impressive.

The complaining, I mean.

World class.

Olympic caliber.

Gold medal stuff.

Nobody complains like Americans.

The government is broken.

The economy is broken.

The media is broken.

The schools are broken.

Congress is broken.

Everything is broken.

Fine.

Now what?

Because complaining isn’t a governing philosophy.

It’s a hobby.

A very popular hobby.

But still a hobby.

Here’s what I’ve noticed.

Everybody wants change.

Almost nobody wants the inconvenience that comes with creating it.

Voting?

Traffic.

Standing in line.

Finding the polling place.

Looking up candidates.

Actually reading something longer than a headline.

What a terrible burden.

Meanwhile, generations before us crossed oceans, survived wars, worked sixteen-hour shifts, and marched through fire hoses just so we’d have the opportunity to spend twenty minutes filling in a ballot.

We’ve somehow managed to turn that into an inconvenience.

Congratulations.

We’ve officially become softer than room-temperature butter.

Here’s another question.

How many hours have you spent arguing about politics this year?

Seriously.

Ten?

Fifty?

A hundred?

Now compare that to the amount of time you’ve spent preparing to vote.

Interesting math, isn’t it?

America has become a country where people spend more time reading restaurant reviews than researching candidates.

We’ll compare vacuum cleaners for three weeks.

We’ll read four hundred online comments before buying a toaster.

But selecting the people who control trillions of dollars and the most powerful government on Earth?

“Eh…I’ll figure it out in line.”

That should terrify everybody.

Here’s another thing.

Stop treating voting like you’re falling in love.

You’re hiring employees.

You don’t hire an accountant because they have a nice smile.

You don’t hire a plumber because they gave an inspiring speech.

You hire people because you think they’ll do the job better than the alternatives.

Politics isn’t speed dating.

It’s human resources.

Act accordingly.

And while we’re at it…

If your candidate loses…

The country isn’t over.

If your candidate wins…

The country isn’t magically fixed.

That’s not how republics work.

Election Day isn’t the finish line.

It’s orientation day.

The real work starts after the ballots are counted.

That’s when citizens are supposed to start paying attention.

Not stop.

Now let me ask one final question.

Five years from now…

Ten years from now…

When somebody asks what you did during this election…

What’s your answer going to be?

“I posted some really clever memes.”

“I argued with strangers.”

“I watched cable news until my blood pressure qualified as a weather balloon.”

Or…

“I voted.”

One of those answers is worth remembering.

The others are just noise.

You’ve had months.

The campaigns are almost over.

The excuses have all expired.

The signs will come down.

The television commercials will disappear.

The text messages will finally stop.

Thank God for that.

But before they do…

You’ve got one job.

Vote.

Not because politicians deserve it.

Most of them probably don’t.

Vote because the republic deserves citizens who still understand who’s supposed to be in charge.

Vote because government works for you.

Vote because future generations won’t care how many complaints you posted online.

They’ll care whether you showed up when it counted.

One week.

That’s all that’s left.

Make it count.
