Well…
This is it.
Sixteen weeks ago we started asking where everybody had gone.
We asked why people were pretending abnormal politics had somehow become normal.
We asked why so many Americans seemed to be waiting for permission to defend their own democracy.
We asked why government employees had somehow convinced the owners of the company that they were the bosses.
We talked about fear.
We talked about silence.
We talked about excuses.
We talked about patriotism.
We talked about the Constitution.
We talked about showing up.
Now we’re done talking.
Now it’s your turn.
For months we’ve heard every complaint imaginable.
“The country’s going the wrong direction.”
“I’m worried about democracy.”
“I’m worried about the economy.”
“I’m worried about corruption.”
“I’m worried about the courts.”
“I’m worried about my kids.”
“I’m worried about the future.”
Fine.
Good.
You should be.
Now shut up and vote.
No, really.
Shut up.
The arguments are over.
The campaign commercials are almost finished.
The fundraising emails will stop.
The consultants will crawl back into whatever expensive caves consultants live in between elections.
The television pundits will find something else to yell about.
Good.
America could use a little less yelling and a little more voting.
Here’s something worth remembering.
Election Day is one of the few days when the richest billionaire in America gets exactly the same number of votes as the poorest retiree.
One.
That’s it.
One vote.
No platinum package.
No executive upgrade.
No VIP lane.
No influencer discount.
Just one vote.
For one day, every citizen walks into the polling place with exactly the same political value.
That’s one of the most radical ideas ever invented.
Don’t waste it.
Here’s another thought.
If you don’t vote because you think your vote doesn’t matter…
You’re helping the people who hope you’ll stay home.
Every campaign in America knows something.
Winning isn’t always about convincing supporters.
Sometimes it’s about convincing opponents that participation is pointless.
Don’t do their work for them.
Make them earn your vote.
Or earn your opposition.
Either way…
Show up.
And one more thing.
After this election…
Don’t disappear.
Don’t become one of those people who wake up every four years, scream for six months, vote once, and vanish again.
Citizenship isn’t seasonal employment.
It’s a permanent position.
Hold whoever wins accountable.
Praise good decisions.
Criticize bad ones.
Demand honesty.
Demand transparency.
Demand competence.
And if they fail…
Fire them next time.
That’s the arrangement.
Always was.
Always should be.
This country doesn’t belong to presidents.
It doesn’t belong to political parties.
It doesn’t belong to billionaires.
It doesn’t belong to cable news.
It doesn’t belong to social media.
It belongs to the people.
At least it does if the people are willing to act like owners instead of spectators.
So this is our final message before Election Day.
No more excuses.
No more waiting.
No more pretending somebody else is going to rescue the republic.
No more confusing posting with participating.
No more confusing patriotism with merchandise.
No more confusing politicians with royalty.
No more.
If you’ve agreed with even half of what you’ve read over these past sixteen weeks…
Prove it.
Walk into your polling place.
Fill out your ballot.
Walk back out.
Then wake up the next morning ready to hold the winners accountable.
That’s how democracy works.
Not perfectly.
Not easily.
But better than any alternative humanity has managed to invent.
Now…
Shut up.
And vote.
