At WPS News, we try not to brag. We let the numbers do it, because numbers have no shame and our marketing department is one person who is also the editor, janitor, and whatever button WordPress moved this week.

For the seven days ending October 26, WordPress Stats attributed 497 views to China, 249 to the United States, and 34 to the Philippines. India checked in with nine; Singapore with three. France and Belgium got two each. South Africa, Russia, and Lithuania each contributed one. That’s a respectable little world tour for a news site that does not own a jet, a bureau in Beijing, or even a second coffee machine.

China, apparently, gave WPS News nearly twice the attention attributed to the United States. This is the point where a serious media mogul would announce an ambitious Asian expansion plan, hire a consultant, and start saying “strategic footprint” in meetings. Here, the editor is looking at a map and wondering whether the numbers mean people, crawlers, or some combination of the internet doing what the internet does.

The dashboard reports views by country; it does not identify individual readers or explain why a page was opened. So this is not proof that 497 people in China gathered around a glowing screen to admire our work. It is proof that WordPress logged 497 views from there, and we are willing to enjoy the moment without asking the data to write its own biography.

WPS News remains an independent news knowledge base with readers, or at least measurable traffic, scattered across the globe. We’ll keep publishing. Apparently, the world has not yet found the unsubscribe button.
